If you lead a team, one of the simplest things you can do is make people feel that they matter.
People want to feel valued. They want to know that their contribution matters and that they add value to something bigger than themselves.
When people feel valued at work, they are more likely to be motivated, perform well and want to stay.
So, here are four simple ways to make your team feel that they matter:
1. Acknowledge them.
Say hello. Ask how they are. Take an interest in what they're doing.
2. Listen to them.
Don't just hear what they say. Show that you've heard it. A simple "I like that idea" can make a difference.
3. Make time for them.
It doesn't need to be a formal meeting. Try "Let's grab a coffee and catch up."
4. Show them how they contribute.Explain how their work helps the wider business. Try "Your work has really contributed to what we're trying to achieve."
Making people feel valued doesn't require a big initiative.
Sometimes, it's simply about making people feel that they matter.
